Former sheriff wins District 1 county commissioner race

ELLSWORTH — Former County Sheriff Bill Clark of Ellsworth is the new commissioner of District 1, a position that is currently filled by developer Steve Joy.

With all but the town of Eastbrook reporting, the former lawman was victorious over Democratic candidate Susan Walsh by 2,114 votes.

Clark took 6,161 votes to Walsh’s 4,047.

“I’m very pleased the public appears to have confidence in my ability and I’ll try to make it up to them when I get there,” Clark said.

Clark won in all 14 of the municipalities in the district that reported, ranging from Ellsworth (2,665-1,509) to Great Pond (24-15) to Otis (316-110). The other towns in District 1 are Amherst, Aurora, Blue Hill, Fletcher’s Landing, Gouldsboro, Mariaville, Osborn, Sorrento, Waltham, Sullivan, Surry, Waltham and Winter Harbor, along with multiple unorganized territories,

Clark served as Hancock County sheriff for 34 years prior to retiring in 2014. He cited his extensive experience in county government as an asset for his candidacy, and he pledged to put an emphasis on transparency and fiscal accountability.

Clark won the Republican primary last June against Joy.

In County Commission District 3, incumbent Antonio Blasi of Hancock held onto his seat against challenger Fred Ehrlenbach of Trenton.

The vote was 5,652 for Blasi and 4,877 for Ehrlenbach.

County Commission District 3 includes Bar Harbor, Cranberry Isles, Franklin, Frenchboro, Hancock, Lamoine, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Swan’s Island, Tremont and Trenton.

Ehrlenbach took the majority of the votes in both his hometown, Trenton, 566-268 as well as Blasi’s hometown, Hancock, 701-550.

However, Blasi outpolled Ehrlenbach in Bar Harbor two to one. The tally there was 2,006 votes for Blasi and 972 for Ehrlenbach.

This will be Blasi’s second term on the board.

The American could not reach Blasi for comment before press time.

There is no word yet on what date Clark and Blasi will be sworn into office. Their terms begin Jan. 1, 2017.
