Former Lawmaker, Farmer Celebrates 100th Birthday

Meredith “Bud” Bordeaux on his 100th birthday.

MOUNT DESERT — Friends of Meredith “Bud” Bordeaux streamed into his house on Sound Drive throughout the afternoon last Thursday, Oct. 4, to wish him a happy 100th birthday.

He operated a dairy farm on property at the head of Somes Sound until 1982, and he was twice elected to the state Legislature, serving from 1979-1982.

He ran as a Republican, he said, “Because in Maine, you couldn’t get elected in those days if you weren’t a Republican.”

The current Legislature adopted a resolution Sept. 20 congratulating Mr. Bordeaux on the “very special occasion” of becoming a centenarian. In February 2009, Mount Desert officials recognized him as the town’s oldest resident.

Asked last week what has kept him going for 100 years, he quipped, “It’s just because I’m so damn contrary.”

He is a long-time Shriner of Anah Temple and part of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
