ELLSWORTH — A former Coastal Eye Care employee who allegedly embezzled funds from the business appeared in U.S. District Court in Bangor Friday before Judge John A. Woodcock Jr.
Carolyn J. Saunders, 57, of Orland signed a waiver of indictment, according to court records. That means the U.S. Attorney’s Office does not need to present the case to a grand jury before moving forward with prosecution.
The theft allegedly occurred between Nov. 7, 2011, and April 28, 2015, according to the complaint.
Saunders “stole and embezzled money belonging to Coastal Eye Care, PA and Coastal Eye Surgery Center, LLC,” according to court records.
“At the time of the thefts, Ms. Saunders was employed as the financial administrator for both entities,” the complaint stated. “In this capacity, her duties included reconciling the cash, check and credit card payments made by patients with the transaction summary generated by the office’s Practice Management System.”
“She would then prepare a deposit slip and make the deposit at the practices’ bank,” according to the complaint. “Saunders knowingly and willfully embezzled money from Coastal Eye Care and Coastal Eye Surgery Center by stealing a portion of the cash receipts before making the deposits. Some of the cash she would spend directly and some she would deposit into her own accounts.”
“She repeated this process scores of times over more than four years, often taking hundreds of dollars at a time for her own personal gain,” according to the complaint.
Saunders is free on personal recognizance bail. She is expected to make another court appearance this fall.
Bangor attorney Jeffrey M. Silverstein represents Saunders.
