TREMONT — Firefighters from three towns responded Friday afternoon to a blaze at a home on the corner of the Dow Point Road and the Tremont Road.

As of 3:30 p.m., smoke continued to emanate from the single-story home as firefighters ascended the roof on a ladder to cut a hole near the chimney. The condition of the structure and cause of the fire were not immediately available.

The home is owned by Joanne Harper, who rents it to her sister. Her sister and family were away when the fire broke out. Ms. Harper said she had just been inside the home to feed her sister’s cats and noticed no problems.

The Tremont Road near the scene was blocked by firefighting equipment. Traffic was rerouted along the Kelleytown Road.

The Tremont Fire Department is being assisted by firefighters from Southwest Harbor and Mount Desert.
