Fire claims Toddy Pond camp Saturday

SURRY — Fire of unknown origin claimed a Carter Cove Lane camp on Toddy Pond Saturday.

Fire Chief Richard Black said crews were called out around 12:30 p.m. and were still putting out hot spots three hours later.

No one was at the camp when the fire broke out, Black said. Several boaters and motorists reported the fire to authorities.

Surry had mutual aid from fire departments from Blue Hill, Orland and Ellsworth as well as the Maine Forest Service. The fire claimed some woods as well, the chief said.

Black said an investigator from the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office would likely visit the scene on Tuesday.
