Feds seize electronic gear

SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Fisherman Andy Mays went to his boat Lost Airmen on Friday and found his Furuno chartplotter missing from the wheelhouse and a federal warrant in its place.

The Southwest Harbor man later learned he is being investigated by the U.S. Coast Guard and can only speculate as to why. He does know that the chartplotter, while seized legally, was removed in a manner that caused considerable damage to the wiring.

He estimates he is facing nearly $1,500 in costs to repair the damage, which doesn’t include lost fishing time.

The Coast Guard is releasing little information about the seizure. Public affairs spokesman Lt. Scott McCann said he could only confirm the Coast Guard Investigative Services (CGIS) has opened a criminal investigation into the owner of Lost Airmen. The matter, he said, is being handled by the U. S. Attorney’s Office in Bangor.
