Survey backs deer control

BAR HARBOR — There are too many deer in town, and methods for culling the herd should be examined, according to the results of a mail survey tallied this week.

A total of 743 property owners completing surveys said they believed there was a deer problem here, compared with 576 who said there was not. A total of 1,319 surveys were returned by the Oct. 1 deadline, out of 2,700 mailed. Every property owner in town was to have received a survey at the beginning of September, and had one month to complete and return it.

The town council is slated to take up the topic when they meet on Oct. 15.
