Economist to Speak at MERI

BLUE HILL — Alice LeBlanc, formerly a senior economist for the Environmental Defense Fund, will speak next Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) on “Climate Change, Ocean Impacts & Policy Solutions.”

Now director at Environmental and Economic Consulting, LeBlanc’s work focuses on balancing corporate interests with sustainable growth and the knowledge that our planet’s impending sixth great extinction will be the first to be induced by a single species — us. She will talk about how to prevent catastrophe using her ideas on economic mechanisms as tools for environmental protection and sustainable development.

LeBlanc’s talk is part of MERI’s 2011 Ocean Environment Lecture Series. It will take place at 7 p.m. at the MERI Center for Marine Studies on Main Street in Blue Hill. A reception will precede the talk at 6 p.m.
