Ellsworth gears up for Autumn Gold

ELLSWORTH — It will look a bit different this year, but there will still be an Autumn Gold festival in Ellsworth. The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce will continue its 35-year tradition of celebrating the fall season with a decorating contest, boat rides, a craft fair, deals, a raffle, the Jumbo Jackpot and more.

Autumn Gold Days will be held Sept. 21-26.

Two signature events, the car show and waterfront chowder competition, will not be in the lineup, however, due to the pandemic. Not to worry, chowder fans — local chefs will offer specials on their award-winning chowders at area restaurants during Autumn Gold. Chamber officials tried to include as many other festivities as possible.

“We are aware that so many events canceled this spring and summer, and we know how important this week is to our businesses” chamber Director Gretchen Wilson explained.

The Autumn Gold Decorating Contest had its largest participation last year and organizers hope to match or beat that number. Businesses or organizations that would like to participate should call the chamber at 667-5584. All storefronts and windows must be completed by Monday, Sept. 21, to be judged.

WVII News 7 will once again do an “On the Road” news broadcast from Ellsworth Friday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m.

There will be free boat rides on the Union River from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. Face coverings will be required. Other local nonprofits will have activities or events along the Harbor walkway. The SPCA will offer microchips for pets. There will be a craft fair and children’s activities at the Maine Coast Mall, as well as a Pull for the Cure event at 10. MXA fitness and Hancock County Relay for Life will host a tug of war — humans vs. a parked fire truck. Teams of 10 will compete in the parking lot. For more information, contact [email protected]

Many chamber member retail stores will offer specials and sales, and shoppers can enter the Go for the Gold Raffle at participating locations (no purchase necessary) for a chance to win gift cards or merchandise.

Of course, it’s not Autumn Gold without the Jumbo Jackpot. The $10 tickets are available at the chamber office. Only 500 will be sold and the winner takes home $2,500.
