ELLSWORTH — The community is rallying to help restore the Stanwood Homestead at Birdsacre after it was damaged by fire Sunday night.

The fire was intentionally set by an unknown person, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

About 40 firefighters from Ellsworth, Trenton, Lamoine and Hancock battled the fire.

Though extinguishing the fire was the primary focus, Ellsworth Fire Chief Richard Tupper said a close second was working to preserve as many of the historical items inside the house as possible.

Firefighters put tarps over furniture and antiques to protect them from water damage.

The building was not insured.

Individuals who want to help with the recovery effort can call Birdsacre at 667-8460 or email [email protected] Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 485, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
