EEMS principal announced

ELLSWORTH — Travis Wood was unanimously approved as middle school principal at Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School at a special School Board meeting on Sept. 3. Wood had served as assistant principal and athletic director for grades five through eight since 2018.

Superintendent Dan Higgins said Wood was the “unanimous top candidate” of the hiring committee, which consisted of Chairwoman Kelly McKenney, board member Paul Markosian, elementary school Principal April Clifford, Higgins and two teachers.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity,” Wood said after the show of hands by the School Board.

Prior to coming to the Ellsworth school system, he was a trainer for nearly eight years at the Maine Department of Education.

“On paper anyone can look good,” board member Muneer Hasham noted. “But that kind of character is hard to find.”

The board next meets on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. for its monthly meeting. A discussion of the mask policy is on the agenda. While the meeting is scheduled at the Council Chambers in City Hall, if a large crowd is expected it will move to the EEMS cafeteria. School Board meetings are also streamed live on the Ellsworth School Department YouTube channel.
