Scoreboard gift accepted for MDI high school

BAR HARBOR — A new $12,000 scoreboard bearing the name of the family that is donating it will soon be installed at the baseball/soccer field at Mount Desert Island High School.

The school board voted Monday night to accept the gift.

Athletic director Bunky Dow said the family, which wished to remain anonymous pending acceptance of the gift, has teenagers on the school’s baseball and soccer teams.

The school board’s 6-3 vote to accept the scoreboard was a reversal of its April 8 decision. A majority of board members at that earlier meeting said they didn’t like the idea of placing the donor’s name on the scoreboard.

Dow said the existing scoreboard probably would need to be replaced within a couple of years, regardless of whether the board accepted the family’s offer of a new one. He said the new one could be expected to last 10 to 15 years.
