School Fuel Oil Lock-in

BAR HARBOR — The boards of Mount Desert Island High School, five elementary schools and the town of Trenton have approved a contract with Acadia Fuel for a guaranteed price of $2.03 a gallon for heating oil for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

For the current year, the schools are paying No Frills Oil $1.89 a gallon. But No Frills was the highest of four bidders for the new contract with a price of $2.36.9. Webber Energy Fuels bid $2.35.33 and Coastal Energy, $2.29.9.

The high school board and the Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Tremont and Trenton school committees approved the Acadia Fuel contract in meetings at the high school Monday night. The Trenton selectmen signed on Tuesday night.

The new contract covers about 80 percent of the amount of heating oil that the schools and town anticipate using next year. They will pay the market rate for any oil they use in excess of that percentage.
