RSU 24 Adopts Teacher Conduct Policy

ELLSWORTH — After several meetings and hours of debate, the Regional School Unit 24 Board Oct. 5 adopted a policy spelling out what teachers and staff can and cannot do with students.

The board voted 9-3 in favor of the three-page policy, which applies to all staff — teachers, coaches, counselors, administrators and volunteers.

The three board members who voted against the measure were Julie Curtis of Eastbrook, Jennifer Shorey of Franklin and Annie Perry of Gouldsboro.

Richard Malaby of Hancock and Jeffrey Alley Jr. of Winter Harbor were absent.

The policy prohibits, among other things, any inappropriate touching of students, any conduct that would be considered harassment, sexual comments or jokes and communicating with students on social networking sites for non-educational purposes.

In addition, the policy prohibits teachers from discussing their personal problems with students and singling out a student for personal attention in such a way that it appears to display a lack of fairness.

The prohibitions relate to any communication, whether it be verbal, phone calls, letters or electronic.
