MMA Homecoming Weekend Scheduled for Oct. 1-3

CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) alumni from throughout the United States will return to the college Oct. 1-3 for annual Homecoming festivities.

Paul Mercer, director of alumni affairs, said this year’s Homecoming gathering welcomes all returning alumni and will honor the reunion classes of 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.

Continuing a recent addition to the celebration, a Homecoming Festival will include a marketplace, auto show and inflatable fun.

Crafters, artisans and produce vendors of all types are encouraged to attend and sell their wares. Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the outdoor marketplace will be held on the campus grounds near the college’s athletic field. It is designed to provide an opportunity for guests of the college to purchase locally grown or made products, while providing another outlet for vendors to showcase their work.

Organizers also encourage owners of classic or antique vehicles to display their cars as part of the day’s celebration. Vendors and auto enthusiasts wishing to participate in the upcoming MMA Homecoming Festival are asked to contact Amy Gutow for further information or to sign up at (207) 326-2253 or via email at [email protected].

Alumni will begin to arrive on campus on Friday afternoon, with registration taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the college’s Harold Alfond Student Center. The annual meeting of the MMA Alumni Association is scheduled to be held at 4 p.m. in the Wyman House.

Alumni and friends will join together at a welcome reception scheduled for 6 p.m.

On Saturday, guest registration will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Harold Alfond Student Center.

The morning schedule will begin with a special “Eight Bells” Memorial Service honoring deceased members of the Class of 1960. The ceremony will be held at 9 on the lawn in front of Leavitt Hall. Other events will include bridge simulator demonstrations, harbor tours and tours of the training ship State of Maine.
