Salutatorian Clare Anderson has taken great advantage of the flexible and interesting educational opportunities in our community, school officials said. She spent most of her childhood summers on Great Duck Island at College of the Atlantic’s seabird research station which her father, a COA professor, runs. She spent the second semester of her junior year at Chewonki Semester School in Wiscasset, a selective and rigorous program for 11th-graders focused on service, the environment and community.

As a junior, Clare took AP calculus and then went on to study linear algebra at COA. She also participated in the rigorous Jackson Lab internship program.

Clare has had training in tap, lyrical jazz and ballet. Building on this experience, she collaborated with a friend and a teacher to found a dance club at MDIHS. She has been a member of the Model UN club, the Interact Club, and the MDIHS drama program. Clare was a National Merit semifinalist. She plans to attend Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. as an anthropology major.

She is the daughter of John and Karen Anderson of Bar Harbor.
