BAR HARBOR — The new roof at Mount Desert Island High School appears to be holding up well, but three windows installed as part of the renovation of the gymnasium more than two years ago continue to leak. School officials are fed up.
“They have leaked since the day they were put in,” said Rob Liebow, superintendent of the Mount Desert Island Regional School System. “It happens when there is a strong southeasterly wind, a driving rainstorm. The seals just aren’t right.”
Mr. Liebow said the general contractor for the gym project, Sheridan Corporation of Fairfield, has “fixed” the windows numerous times, but they continue to leak. He said Sheridan officials have blamed American Window, the subcontractor that installed the windows, but he said Sheridan is ultimately responsible. He recently asked the school system’s law firm, Drummond Woodsum of Portland, to send Sheridan a letter to that effect.
“Sometimes it helps for someone to say, ‘Dear Sir, I have been retained by MDI High School to get you to fix the windows,’” Mr. Liebow said. “So, that’s the next step.”
