BAR HARBOR — Local school system officials hope that Maine education commissioner Stephen Bowen will be impressed by what he sees and hears during his daylong visit to Mount Desert Island schools on Sept. 21.
“We would like for him to come away with a good understanding of the positive work we’re doing here with the central standards and personalizing education,” said Rob Liebow, superintendent of the Mount Desert Island Regional School System (MDIRSS).
“We also would like to learn from him about his plan for [education in] Maine and how his vision fits with ours.”
Brian Hubbell, Bar Harbor school committee member and former MDIRSS board chairman, said in a Sept. 13 e-mail to members of the town council, “In previous discussions, we have found the commissioner to be open-minded, a good listener and engaged in the issues. We expect that we will be able to convey to him the qualities of community engagement that make our region perhaps unusual.”
