SULLIVAN — A Gouldsboro contractor is building a new home for Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24) and is giving the district 10 years to decide if it wants to buy it.
The RSU board Tuesday night voted to authorize the superintendent to enter into a 10-year lease with Kevin Barbee of Barbee Construction for a building on Route 1 in Sullivan.
Barbee will build the 9,000-square-foot facility on the site of the former Scores restaurant and bar.
Barbee said after the meeting that the paperwork will be concluded Friday and construction should start “within a month or so.”
The lease will begin July 1, 2015.
The rent for the new building will be $120,000 per year for the first five years and will increase 2 percent each year of the final five years.
The rent is less than the combined amount the RSU is paying for space in the Mill Mall in Ellsworth, at a bus storage facility in Hancock and for other storage space.
In addition to offices for RSU 24 administrators and its information technology department, the facility also will include a two-bay bus repair garage and storage area with loading dock.
