COA Chooses Alum as New President

Dr. Darron Collins is the new president of College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor.

BAR HARBOR — Dr. Darron Collins, an expert in the connection between plants and people for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and a 1992 graduate of College of the Atlantic has been named the school’s new president.

Dr. Collins will succeed David Hales who announced late last year that he would be stepping down this summer.

For WWF Dr. Collins led the design, fund-raising, and implementation of conservation programs, in the Amur-Heilong watershed of eastern Mongolia, Northeastern China, and the Russian Far East, working closely with WWF network partners in the three countries.

He received his bachelor’s degree in human ecology from COA and his Master of Arts and doctorate from Tulane University in New Orleans. Throughout his studies he has examined how plants shape human communities and how humans shape botanical communities.

On COA’s website, Dr. Collins indicated he was the first member of his family to go to college. “COA wasn’t exactly what my parents thought college would look like. But for me it was magical,” he says. “I can’t put my finger on it, but the combination of the ocean, the students, the faculty, and Acadia National Park was perfect.”
