DEER ISLE — Edible Island, a nonprofit organization that offers culinary experiences and educational opportunities, has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Deer Isle Stonington High School graduating senior Jacob Shaw.
The Zach Rosenfield Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior from Deer Isle-Stonington or the Blue Hill Peninsula who is pursuing studies related to culinary arts, agriculture, ecology, health and/or nutrition.
“We are thrilled to award the scholarship to Jacob,” said Edible Island Interim Executive Director Oriana Wuerth. “He has been a key member of the DISHS cooking class and his attention to detail and care for the food he prepares are impressive.
“I’m confident that Jacob will continue to develop his culinary skills next year, and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes.”
Shaw completed Edible Island’s yearlong culinary arts course at Deer Isle-Stonington High School this past year. The full-credit course teaches high school students valuable kitchen and life skills, which can lead to employment in food businesses.
The students take charge of the school lunch program every other week, developing a menu, trying out recipes and preparing a meal for the entire school.
“When I first enrolled in the school lunch class I knew we would be cooking, but I didn’t expect to cook for the whole school or specific events,” Shaw said. “I didn’t realize we were going to use the large kitchen to cook large quantities of food.
“I expected to cook for ourselves various dishes to just try out the different flavors. Throughout the course, I learned different techniques on how to prepare food.”
Shaw will pursue a degree in culinary arts at Eastern Maine Community College next year.
Shaw plans to continue to develop his cooking skills and gain additional experience in the food industry. Ultimately, he would love to open his own restaurant.
To date, the Zach Rosenfield Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to 10 local students, totaling $9,500. All proceeds from Edible Island’s annual Men Who Cook event benefit this scholarship fund.
