Corrected: Dunkin’ Donuts plan riles some in Blue Hill

BLUE HILL — A Dunkin’ Donuts proposed across from Tradewinds Marketplace has generated fear that South Street will become dotted with chain stores like High Street in Ellsworth.

The Blue Hill Planning Board heard comments at a meeting Monday to review the project.

The owners of Tradewinds, Chuck and Belinda Lawrence, propose to build the store, which would be operated by the MacDonald family of Brewer.

At the meeting, Blue Hill resident Bob Marville told the board he never would have sold the Lawrences the land if he’d known it would become a chain restaurant.

“Within six or eight years, South Street will look like High Street,” Marville said. “If that’s what people want in this town, so be it.”

“I think we can manage that and not affect the village appearance,” Tradewinds owner Chuck Lawrence said.

Lawrence said he understands that some peninsula residents do not want a Dunkin’ Donuts but that the majority do want one.

After comments were taken, the board reviewed the application and voted unanimously that it was complete.

The next step for the project is a public hearing, which the board will hold Monday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m.

Correction: An earlier version misrepresented a statement by Tradewinds Marketplace owner Chuck Lawrence. Lawrence said he does not intend to bring other franchises to Blue Hill and would not support any future chain stores in the town.
