COVID hosptializations break previous record

ELLSWORTH — Another record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations was reported by the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dec. 21.

Three hundred and eighty-seven people were hospitalized with the virus as of Tuesday. Of those patients, 125 were in critical care and 62 were on ventilators.

Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah called the figure “a sad new high mark.”

The news comes as Mainers prepare to gather for Christmas and cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant have been detected within the state.

The Maine CDC also reported 22 COVID-related deaths Dec. 21. One of the reported deaths was of a person in Hancock County.

Fifteen of those deaths were identified by vital records review and occurred between Nov. 9 and Dec. 1.

One death was of a person between 30 and 39 years old.
