SURRY — The Surry Community Improvement Association (SCIA) has bestowed its Citizen of the Year honor on a couple: Dave and Pat Hollenberg.

“They are relative newcomers to Surry, but they have really pitched in and helped a lot,” said Rebecca Collison, SCIA past president and chairman of the Awards Selection Committee. “They both have done an enormous amount for the Surry community.”

The recognition was a surprise. Each thought the other was being honored.

Pat is a retired teacher. Dave is retired from a research and product development career in the paper industry.

Both have contributed significant amounts of time and energy since moving to Surry in 2008.

“Pat has been in charge of the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, which is bringing a sculptor to Surry this summer,” Collison said. “She has organized all of that and the fundraising, et cetera.”

Pat also filled in a vacancy on the Surry School Committee.

Dave served as co-chairman of the Surry Comprehensive Plan Committee.

“He has also served as vice president of the Surry Garden Club,” Collison said. “He also serves on the SCIA Committee.”
