Two killed in Machias motorcycle crash

MACHIAS — Two University of Maine at Machias students died Sunday as the result of a crash on Route 92/Elm Street in Machias.

Ashley Falanka, 19, of Aroostook County and Michael Koski, 19, of Spencer, N.Y., were pronounced dead at the scene, said Machias Police Chief Grady Dwelley. He declined to say which Aroostook County town Falanka was from. The Portland Press Herald reported she was from Mount Chase.

The students were riding a motorcycle that collided with a car around 5 p.m. The road was closed for about four hours for the investigation, which included accident reconstruction by Maine State Police.

The accident occurred just hours after the university’s spring commencement ceremony began at 2 p.m. May 12. The victims were not graduating seniors.

Because the investigation has not yet been completed, Dwelley said Tuesday he was unable to release any further details.
