Three arrested in Verona Island drug bust

VERONA ISLAND — Three people were arrested and cash, fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine seized here March 9, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Commander Peter Arno reported.

Jeffrey Witham, 45, was arrested on a charge of aggravated drug trafficking — an offense elevated to a Class A felony due to a previous drug trafficking conviction, Arno said.

Veronica Gomm, 36, was arrested on a charge of drug trafficking.

Therion Harmon, 20, of Deer Isle was also charged with drug trafficking.

All are at the Hancock County Jail pending an initial appearance before a judge, the officer said.

Early in the morning on March 9, MDEA agents, in conjunction with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, stopped a vehicle Witham was driving. Gomm was a passenger.

“At the time of the stop, Witham had court-ordered search and testing conditions imposed by the court stemming from pending criminal offenses,” Arno said. During the stop, agents and deputies searched the vehicle as well as Witham and Gomm.

“Seized during this search was methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine and fentanyl along with several thousand dollars in suspected drug proceeds,” Arno said. Witham and Gomm were arrested and taken to the jail.

“Immediately after this vehicle stop, agents obtained a search warrant for Witham’s residence located on Verona Island,” said Arno. The warrant was executed just before noon March 9 and police found Harmon in the residence, allegedly in possession of 20 grams of methamphetamine, police said.

“Additionally, following a search of Witham’s house, agents located additional methamphetamine, along with suspected fentanyl and $20,000 in suspected drug proceeds,” Arno said.

Between the vehicle and house search as well as that of the occupants in the vehicle, agents allegedly seized a total of “46 grams of Cocaine HCL, 30 grams of suspected fentanyl, 5 grams of crack cocaine and over $25,000 in suspected drug proceeds,” Arno said.

“MDEA was assisted extensively in this investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, who dedicated a number of agent resources to our efforts throughout Hancock and Washington County,” Arno said. “Further assistance was also provided by the Maine State Police and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).”
