Thirty drivers summonsed for speeding on 1A

ELLSWORTH — Police conducted several traffic details this week, issuing dozens of tickets, including many for the same offense: traveling 64 mph in a 55-mph-zone.

Coincidence? Not exactly. Officers have a fair amount of discretion when it comes to writing tickets and frequently give drivers a break by ticketing them for lower speeds than those at which they were actually traveling.

They will occasionally write the clocked speed in the margin of the ticket, so there is a record, but officially record the speed lower.

“It’s really a compassion thing,” former Lt. Harold Page previously told The Ellsworth American. The point is to get the message across by writing tickets for lower speeds or giving drivers a warning, police told The American.

Fines are based on how many miles over the speed limit a driver was traveling. The lowest fine bracket is for 1 to 9 miles over the limit.
