Subject of Silver Alert found in Southwest Harbor

ELLSWORTH — A Litchfield woman was taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital for evaluation Monday afternoon after a statewide search that began Sunday when she failed to appear at a relative’s house in Bangor.

The Maine State Police had issued a Silver Alert for Jacka Beckwith, 77, said Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland.

A Silver Alert is a public notification system to broadcast information about missing persons — especially senior citizens with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other mental disabilities — to help find them.

Beckwith was spotted in the Washington County town of Baileyville on Monday morning asking for directions to Bangor, McCausland said. Convenience store clerks who gave the woman directions didn’t realize she had been reported missing until she drove away.

Beckwith was reportedly seen near Ship Harbor in Southwest Harbor around 3:50 p.m. Monday.

Southwest Harbor and Tremont police and firefighters began a search, Tremont Fire Chief Keith Higgins said. A firefighter found Beckwith in her red Subaru Legacy on Main Street, turning into Norwood Cove Apartments.
