Sheriff investigating incident with police dog

ELLSWORTH — Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane is investigating a complaint from a woman involved in a traffic stop earlier this month who alleges she was bit by a police dog.

“There was an incident involving the K-9,” Kane said. “I don’t have all the information yet.”

The sheriff said the woman called him to complain about the incident and he advised her that any complaint about an officer needs to be written. The woman has since submitted a written complaint, he said.

Kane is waiting on two more written statements from individuals involved in the incident.

“I’ll put it all together and look at the videos and see what we’ve got,” the sheriff said.

By videos, Kane is referencing footage recorded by dashboard cameras that each deputy’s cruiser is equipped with.
