Runaway with handgun spurs school lockdowns



GOULDSBORO — Sumner Memorial High School and the Peninsula School were placed on lockdown May 29 while police searched for a youth suspected of having a stolen handgun.

Police said the 15-year-old runaway from Steuben had been last seen on foot on Route 1 in Gouldsboro and was believed to have fled into the woods. The boy was later found on Route 1 and taken into custody. Police recovered a loaded handgun.

The boy was transferred to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which served as the lead agency for the case. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
