Rascally wabbits cause wreck

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — A “hare-raising” experience led to a Brewer man crashing his car Sunday night at Manset Corner.

According to police, 29-year-old Joshua Roberts was southbound on Main Street when two of the three pet rabbits he had in a carrier got loose and hopped onto the floorboards near the brake pedal and accelerator. Roberts was attempting to turn left onto the Seawall Road and, in the ensuing confusion, tried to stomp on the brakes.

“Instead, he hit the gas and drove head-on into a tree,” Chief David Chapais said.

The driver sustained minor injuries but declined treatment, Chief Chapais said.

One of the young bunnies also was injured.

Earlier that night, Roberts was stopped on High Street in Ellsworth by Ellsworth police and issued a summons for following another vehicle too closely.
