SULLIVAN — A Harrington woman was taken to the hospital following a two-car crash on Route 1 Monday afternoon.
Police say the crash occurred after one of the two drivers involved fell asleep.
State Trooper Chris Smith said 67-year-old Robert Wilson of Surry was southbound (toward Ellsworth) on Route 1 and had fallen asleep when he rounded the curve at the intersection with Route 185.
Wilson, who was driving an Audi TT, crossed over the centerline and struck a Buick Lucerne driven by 75-year-old Wayne Hammond of Harrington.
The crash occurred around 3:25 p.m., Smith said. Hammond had been heading north, but attempted to cross over when he saw Wilson’s vehicle in his lane.
Wilson’s vehicle went off the road into a small parking area, and long brake marks were visible behind the vehicle at the scene.
The Buick was spun around almost 180 degrees, facing back in the direction it came from. Wayne Hammond was uninjured, but his wife, Alice Hammond (also 75), sustained unspecified injuries in the crash. She was transported from the scene by County Ambulance.
Wilson was not injured in the crash, and was walking around and talking with first responders at the scene.
In addition to state police and County Ambulance, firefighters from Sullivan and Sorrento responded to the scene as well. Route 1 was reduced to one-lane traffic for a time.
