BAR HARBOR — A man who ran from police during a traffic stop Sunday was chased through the woods and subdued with pepper spray before being taken into custody.
Police say Elliott Wheaton, 24, of Bar Harbor and Arizona, was observed pulling his 1999 Ford F-150 into the parking lot of several lodging properties on Route 3 that were closed-for-the-season around 1 a.m. Sunday. After he became suspicious of Mr. Wheaton’s activities, Officer Soren Sundberg followed him, and eventually turned on his lights and siren to pull him over.
Mr. Wheaton eventually pulled into a private driveway off a road near Hamilton Pond and fled his vehicle. An officer chased him and subdued Mr. Wheaton when he would not submit to arrest.
Mr. Wheaton was arrested on a charge of operating while under the influence and taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, where he remained in custody until Tuesday. His blood alcohol level at the time of his arrest allegedly was .14 percent, according to reports. The legal limit for blood alcohol level is .08 percent.
