WINTER HARBOR — The National Park Service is investigating a fire Aug. 6 in the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park.
Forest ranger John Cousins said the forest service, firefighters from Winter Harbor and park service rangers responded to the fire, reported at about 5:30 p.m.
The fire turned out to be caused by a campfire that had not been properly extinguished in the Schoodic Woods Campground. The fire burned, mostly underground, over about two-tenths of an acre.
The park service will be investigating and those responsible may face charges, Cousins said.
The campers came to the site after hours the previous night but still had not checked in the following morning, he said.
