ELLSWORTH — The Maine State Police say a Sullivan man who was reported missing Feb. 9 knew he was the subject of a criminal investigation when he reportedly left a Water Street apartment on foot without his phone or wallet.

“Anson Snowdeal is the subject of an active criminal investigation,” said Maine Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Shannon Moss. “Anson is aware of the investigation and pending charges and knew of them at the time of his disappearance. Law enforcement is still actively seeking Anson and information about his whereabouts with regards to the investigation.”

Snowdeal is 41.

The case is being handled by the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office.

“I approved the arrest warrant affidavit and complaint on February 14, and I assume the court granted the warrant on or soon after that date,” said District Attorney Matt Foster. “It is an EPD [Ellsworth Police Department] investigation and the allegations are theft, Class B (more than $10,000) and home repair fraud, Class D.”

Arrest warrant affidavits, as a matter of course, are sealed by the courts until executed.

“The Ellsworth Police Department is actively assisting the Maine State Police in their investigation into the whereabouts of Mr. Snowdeal,” said Ellsworth City Manager and Police Chief Glenn Moshier. “Our criminal investigation involves a business dealing Mr. Snowdeal was involved with in 2021. Before he went missing our department had been in contact with Mr. Snowdeal and we were attempting to get the matter resolved. We certainly hope that this pending matter will not impede the safe return of Mr. Snowdeal.”

Why haven’t police announced earlier that Snowdeal is the subject of a criminal investigation?

“Those details weren’t critical for the public to know until investigators could figure out the circumstances surrounding his disappearance,” Moss explained.

“We have no evidence to believe that Anson Snowdeal is endangered and sufficient evidence to show that he is avoiding detection,” she said. “New information may change that, but at this point our investigators have followed every single lead and they all point to the same thing.”

Snowdeal has a twin brother.
