Shoplifting complaint leads to drug charges
ELLSWORTH — Trooper Owen Reed on April 15 responded to Orland to assist the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office with a shoplifting complaint.
As a result of the investigation, Jacob Betts, 21, of Deer Isle was arrested on a charge of possession of Schedule W drugs and summoned on a charge of theft. Shawn Betts, 32, of Palermo and Richard Betts, 26, of Deer Isle also were arrested and each charged with possession of Schedule W drugs.
Cpl. Jeff Taylor, a Maine warden, a fire marshal, the Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency assisted in the investigation.
Accident
Trooper Keith York responded to a serious injury crash on Route 1 in Calais April 15. Daniel Davis, 64, of East Machias was traveling north in a 2006 Jeep Cherokee. Kristopher Preston, 34, of Roque Bluffs was southbound in a 2005 Chevy Silverado. The collision occurred in the southbound lane.
“Failure to maintain the proper lane and fog were a factor in this crash,” according to state police.
Sgt. Jeff Ingemi, Trooper Josh Lander, the Calais Fire Department, the Baileyville Fire Department, Downeast EMS and Bohannon’s Towing assisted at the scene. A crash reconstruction and forensic mapping are being conducted.
Safety first
Sgt. Jason Sattler and Cpl. Gavin Endre conducted a safety checkpoint April 14 in Lamoine. Approximately 240 vehicles were checked. “Many safety violations were addressed,” according to police.
