Head-on crash shuts down Route 1 in Hancock

Update 4:24 p.m. April 7: The Hancock/Sullivan bridge is now open.

HANCOCK — A head-on crash on Route 1 in Hancock shut down the road near the town line of Sullivan Thursday afternoon, Maine State Police spokeswoman Shannon Moss reported.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternate route,” she said.

Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies were rerouting traffic in the vicinity of Tideway Market in Hancock.

Moss said the accident was caused when a load shifted on a manufactured home that was being escorted. The load shift caused a tractor-trailer transporting the home to jackknife and strike an oncoming vehicle head-on. There were possible injuries, but no further details were available as of 4 p.m. Thursday.
