Hancock County Sheriff’s Log Week of Nov. 29

ELLSWORTH — Detective Stephen McFarland investigated an old ATM machine that was discovered in the woods last week.

A Deer Isle woman found the machine off Dexter Farm Road in North Deer Isle on Nov. 20, McFarland said.

“I recovered the ATM machine, which appeared to be old and showed no real signs of tampering on the outside,” the detective said.

A woman later contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report she had left the machine as a joke, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Slippery road conditions led to a variety of crashes in recent days, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Snow and freezing rain contributed to a crash on the Castine Road Sunday, police reported.

A 2005 Jeep was traveling north when its driver lost control of the vehicle as it went around a curve, Deputy David Lord said.

The Jeep overcorrected, left the road, struck a tree stump and then rolled onto its driver’s side, Lord said.

Hannah Brewer, 22, of Boothbay Harbor was operating the vehicle, which sustained an undisclosed amount of damage and had to be towed, the deputy said.

Brewer was not injured.

A pickup truck went off the road and rolled over when its driver tried to pass another vehicle on a snow-covered Route 9 in Aurora Nov. 22, Lt. Tim Cote said.

Kempton Spencer, 78, of Enfield was driving a 2006 Ford Ranger, which was total loss, Cote said.

Spencer and his 17-year-old passenger suffered minor cuts and declined medical treatment.

A car went off the road and rolled over when its driver lost control after striking a snowdrift in the roadway on Waltham Road in Waltham Nov. 22, Cote said.

Timothy Wyckoff, 56, of Blue Hill was driving a 2005 Subaru, the lieutenant said. There is no word on a damage estimate.

A sport utility vehicle drove over a driveway and several rocks after drifting off the roadway of Route 179 in Mariaville Saturday, Deputy Luke Gross reported.

Scott Flanders, 56, of Brewer was driving a 2010 Toyota Rav4, which sustained a reportable amount of damage, Gross said.

Domestic violence assault

On Saturday, Deputy Brian Archer arrested Chatree Chaikaew, 49, of Blue Hill and Thailand on a charge of domestic violence assault. Chaikaew allegedly assaulted a Blue Hill woman, Archer said.

Neighbor issue

A Surry man called police Nov. 20 to complain that his neighbor was operating a snow plow in such a way as to cause a traffic hazard and shining headlights in his window.

Cote met with the neighbor, who was plowing his driveway with a John Deere Gator, which is a small utility vehicle. Cote said the complaint was unfounded.

A boarding home in Franklin reported an altercation between two residents on Saturday. Gross investigated and said no charges would be filed.

Mental health issue

Deputy David Lord went to an Otis residence Friday to help the Maine State Police with an out of control youth.

A trooper took the child for an evaluation, Lord said.
