ELLSWORTH — An Ellsworth man was arrested July 17 in connection with the theft and burning of a 2006 Dodge Durango that was found destroyed in Franklin July 8, Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland reported.

Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Christopher Whynott, 26, on a charge of burglary of a motor vehicle and two counts of violating conditions of his release, Deputy Travis Frost reported.

McCausland said the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office also charged Whynott with arson.

The sport utility vehicle was taken from a home on the Bert Gray Road in Sullivan and was later found destroyed by fire off the Alder Brook Road in Franklin, McCausland said.

The Maine State Police also helped with the investigation.

Suspicious

A Lamoine woman called police Sunday after finding a suspicious item in her residence.

“It was determined the item was a small alarm which had been put in place by the complainant’s family without her knowledge,” said Deputy Christopher Sargent.

Criminal mischief

Sargent is investigating an incident in which all four tires on a Lamoine man’s vehicle were slashed while the man was parked at his former residence in Lamoine Sunday.

“The complainant believed the responsible party was his former roommate,” Sargent said.

Arrest

A traffic stop in Blue Hill July 18 led to charges for a motorist who had allegedly been traveling 93 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone, said Deputy Zach Allen.

Allen arrested David Hipsky, 52, of Blue Hill on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant and criminal speed.

Speeding

Deputy Dakota Dupuis summoned Daniel Nathan, 46, of New York on a charge of criminal speed on Route 1A in Dedham Sunday. Nathan was allegedly traveling 98 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone while traveling up a hill, Dupuis said.

Accidents

A car hit and broke a utility pole after trying to avoid another car, which had slowed to turn left into a private driveway on the Ellsworth Road in Blue Hill July 16, Deputy Mariza Gionfriddo reported. Sun glare prevented the motorist in the first car from seeing the other car slow down.

Kenneth Weeks of Blue Hill was driving a Subaru Legacy, which struck the utility pole, Gionfriddo said. Weeks was trying to avoid a collision with a Subaru Impreza, driven by Kimberly Gabe of Blue Hill, the deputy said.

Drug paraphernalia charges

Deputy Travis Frost arrested Jenna Maddocks, 26, of Searsport on charges of sale and use of drug paraphernalia, operating after suspension and violating conditions of her release after a traffic stop in Verona Island Monday. Maddocks also had two outstanding warrants.

Frost summoned Maddocks’ passenger, Brittany Heath, 26, of Swanville, on a charge of sale and use of drug paraphernalia.

Further charges are pending, Frost said.

More summonses

Detective Franklin Jennings summoned Erin Mclean, 33, of Bangor on a charge of operating after suspension July 19 on Route 1A in Dedham.

Agency assists

Allen helped the Maine State Police respond to an underage drinking party in Blue Hill Saturday.

Sargent assisted the Bucksport Police Department by driving a man the department had arrested on Sunday to the Hancock County Jail.

Citizen assists

A Massachusetts woman spoke with Lt. Tim Cote July 17 about concerns she had for her sister who is living in the area and exhibiting signs of mental illness.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services asked deputies to check on an Orland resident who is checked on periodically, Allen said.
