Hancock County Sheriff: Pedal Problems Lead to Accidents

ELLSWORTH — Motorists had accelerator problems this week, which led to accidents in Franklin and Hancock, Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies reported.


A pickup truck struck wooden posts at the Franklin Trading Post after a motorist hit the accelerator instead of the brakes Sept. 20, police said. The truck came to rest on the store’s deck.

Raymond Golfieri, 61, of Perry was driving a 1997 Ford, which sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage, police reported.

A Jeep rear-ended a pickup truck on Route 1 in Hancock Friday after a motorist’s sandal got tangled in her accelerator and she was unable to stop in time to avoid the pickup truck, police reported.

Catherine Pickard, 22, of Franklin was driving east in a 1995 Jeep, which struck a 2004 GMC operated by Gregory Turner, 56, of Sullivan, police reported.

Police estimated $4,000 in damage to the truck and $3,000 for the Jeep.

A car collided with another car after its driver failed to stop at the intersection of Route 175 and School House Road in Orland Sunday.

Nathan Best, 19, of Columbia Falls was driving a 2001 Honda Civic, which collided with a 2003 Volkswagen Passat wagon driven north on Route 175 by Michael Manning, 29, of Belfast, police said.

Police estimated $9,000 in damage to the Volkswagen and $7,000 for the Honda.

Bucksport Ambulance personnel checked out both motorists at the scene, police said.

The driver of a sport utility vehicle left the road and struck a utility pole and then left the scene on Eggemoggin Road in Deer Isle Sept. 25.

The vehicle, a 1999 Ford SUV, was a total loss, police said.


A wooden statue of a fisherman was stolen from the lawn of a Brooklin business Saturday. Police are investigating.

Tools were stolen from a Surry job site Sept. 23.

A Brooksville property owner said $100 worth of firewood is missing from a field.


Nathaniel Sargent, 22, of Gouldsboro turned himself in on a warrant charging failure to appear.

Leonild Murphy, 71, of Bucksport turned himself in on a warrant.
