Hancock County Sheriff: Deputies Investigating Theft of Giant Flag

ELLSWORTH — Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the theft of a large American flag that was taken from a Trenton business in 2008 and recovered at an Ellsworth residence last week.

The Ellsworth Police Department recovered the flag during the course of another investigation.

The flag, which measures 20 feet by 40 feet and weighs approximately 35 pounds, was stolen from Linnehan Auto’s corporate offices on Route 3 in June 2008. Linnehan sold its auto dealerships to Lee Auto earlier this year.

The theft was the third time in five years that a flag belonging to Linnehan Investments had been stolen. The thefts usually occurred a couple weeks before the Fourth of July, an employee said at the time.

Guest Assistance

Deputy Chris Sargent was called to help the Ellsworth Police Department deal with an unwanted guest at an Ellsworth residence Christmas Day. By the time Sargent arrived, an Ellsworth officer was able to successfully defuse the situation.
