Gun gesture leads to arrest

BAR HARBOR — A man faces gun and drug charges after allegedly pointing a loaded handgun at his pregnant girlfriend.

Police say Stafford Venema, 21, of Fort Irwin, Calif., had been cleaning his Glock 9 mm handgun at the Eagle Lake Road home he shares with his girlfriend when he approached the woman and pointed the weapon at her. The gun was loaded at the time.

When Venema left to go to the store, the woman called police and unloaded the gun. A young child in the home was brought to a residence next door, according to reports.

Venema was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. He allegedly told police that he was just joking around when he pointed the Glock at his girlfriend.

Venema was also allegedly found with suboxone not prescribed to him. He was summonsed on a charge of possession of scheduled drugs.

Mount Desert police assisted at the scene. Police here served Venema on Monday with a protection order to stay away from his girlfriend.
