Grand jury indicts New York man on rape and kidnapping charges

ELLSWORTH — A Hancock County grand jury indicted a New York man Feb. 7 on charges he raped and kidnapped a woman Jan. 4 and 8 at Acadia Village Resort.

Michael Palmatier, 63, was indicted on one count each of the following charges: gross sexual assault, kidnapping, aggravated assault, assault, terrorizing, obstructing a report of a crime and violating a protection order.

Ellsworth Police Capt. Troy Bires said after the incident, “He basically was holding her hostage in there, assaulting her.”

The woman, who uses a wheelchair, was able to contact an employee of the resort, who called police.

“She had a protection order against him in New York,” Bires said, “for similar (behavior), not quite as extreme as what went on up here.”

Police arrested Palmatier Jan. 8. He is still incarcerated at the Hancock County Jail.

Ellsworth attorney William Ashe represents Palmatier.
