ELLSWORTH — Several area law enforcement agencies responded to the parking lot of TJ Maxx on Feb. 8 around noon for a report that a man was sitting in a vehicle “pointing a gun.”
When officers arrived, they found that the man was “looking at a newly purchased handgun,” and that he hadn’t pointed the gun or threatened to harm anyone. No charges were filed.
The Ellsworth Police Department along with members of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Warden Service and the Maine State Police responded to the incident.
At least two car-deer collisions were reported over the past week. One occurred on the Surry Road around 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 4, when a Hancock woman driving an SUV hit a deer that had run into the road. The vehicle wasn’t damaged. The deer was “dispatched and collected by the driver’s husband,” according to police.
Several days later, a Mariaville man driving a truck on the Mariaville Road on Feb. 9 hit a deer that entered the roadway just before 5 a.m. The deer hit the driver’s side of the truck and caused minor damage. No injuries were reported. The condition of the deer was not available.
Police and emergency personnel were called to a local residence on Feb. 4 for a report of an overdose. When they arrived they learned that a man had “taken too many of a prescription medication in order for him to feel better, not to harm himself,” according to police. Northern Light Medical Ambulance brought the man to the hospital.
Police were called to a local bar on Feb. 4 for a report of a possible fight but found the bar owner reportedly “shouting at his brother.”
A resident reported missing from a local retirement home on Feb. 5 was found uninjured at the home a short time later.
Luis Hernandez, 39, of Las Vegas, Nev., was arrested on Feb. 4 on a charge of operating under the influence.
Damien Spelas, 36, of Orland was arrested on Feb. 4 on an outstanding warrant.
Andrea Weed, 37, of Sedgwick was arrested after a traffic stop on Feb. 9 on a charge of operating under the influence.
Thefts and other losses
Leianne Carter, 30, no residence given, was summoned on a theft charge this week for reportedly stealing items from Marden’s on Jan. 30.
Jerome C. Anderson, 31, of Orlando, Fla. was charged with theft after reportedly stealing items from Walmart on Feb. 7.
Tegan Mcguire, 26, of Stonington was charged with theft following an incident at a local business on Feb. 8.
Tonya Harriman, 44, of Ellsworth was charged with theft after police received a shoplifting complaint from Walmart on Feb. 8.
Brandon Monroe, 26, of Winter Harbor, operating a motor vehicle while improperly using a handheld device on State Street on Feb. 6.
Vincent Cogdell, 38, of Ellsworth, operating after suspension following a traffic stop on State Street on Feb. 5.
