Ellsworth Police Log Week of Aug. 30

ELLSWORTH — A 39-year-old Brewer man was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center with head injuries on Aug. 21 following an all-terrain vehicle crash on Whitmore Road.

The accident occurred around 5 p.m.

Lizike Pickeral was driving the ATV when it went into a ditch along the side of the road. Pickeral was thrown from the vehicle and found by a resident, who called police.

Pickeral was bleeding from his head, according to a Police Department report of the accident, and had suffered neck injuries as well.

Pickeral was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center. The Maine Warden’s Service, which investigated the crash, said Pickeral was not wearing a helmet and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Gunshot reports investigated

Police received two reports of gunshots this week — one in the late afternoon on Aug. 25 and another the following evening.

The first incident was reported near the Bridge Hill Apartments and the second on Seaveys Way.

Officers investigated the areas but failed to locate the source of the reported shots.

Unruly teen

Police received a report of a man yelling at his child on Aug. 21, according to a police report of the incident. Officers spoke with the boy’s father, who said he “was having issues with the teenager not listening.”

Thefts and other losses

A man staying at the Colonial Inn reported that he had woken up on the morning of Aug. 23 to find cigarette burns on the seat of his motorcycle, resulting in $500 worth of damage, according to a police report.

Officers are investigating.


Ellsworth police set up a sobriety checkpoint on High Street on Aug. 24. Overtime funding came from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

Officers stopped 657 cars and arrested a Gouldsboro man on a charge of operating motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant. Forty-one-year-old Tod Nischan was taken to Hancock County Jail after being stopped during the detail.

Aaron Higgins, 34, of Bar Harbor was arrested on a warrant on Aug. 23 charging him with failure to appear.

Joseph Bradley, 35, of Lamoine was arrested on Aug. 23 on six outstanding warrants.

Jason Mann, 38, of Bucksport was arrested on Aug. 24 on a warrant out of Hancock County.

Matthew A. Foster, 38, of Deer Isle was arrested on Aug. 27 on a warrant charging him with failure to appear.

James Grindel, 52, of Bar Harbor was arrested on Aug. 27 on a warrant charging him with failure to appear.

Joseph Pinkham, 32, of Sullivan was arrested on Aug. 27 on a warrant charging him with failure to appear.


Gregory Brown, 33, of Trenton was issued a summons following a traffic stop on Water Street on Aug. 22 for allegedly attaching false plates.

William Petrucci, 24, of Winterport was summoned on a charge of operating without a license following a traffic stop on Aug. 24.

Traffic violations

The following residents were summoned for alleged traffic violations:

Steven Complan, 15, of Beaumont, Texas, failure to display proof of insurance on Route 1 on Aug. 26.

Sean Evans, 35, of Bar Harbor, failure to display proof of inspection on Route 1 on Aug. 25.

Kelly Leeman, 58, of Bucksport, speeding 85 mph in a 55-mph-zone on Route 1 on Aug. 21.

Beatrice Merchant, 70, of Hancock, failure to register a vehicle for between 30 and 150 days on East Main Street on Aug. 22.
