BUCKSPORT — The Maine State Police said a Massachusetts driver nearly hit a state trooper and then led police on a high speed chase, which started here on the Mast Hill Road and ended on Main Street in Winterport Wednesday.
Troop J Commander Lt. Rod Charette said Trooper Dana Austin stopped a car at 5:28 p.m.
“While dealing with one occupant of the vehicle, the operator took off at a high rate of speed and a high speed pursuit ensued,” Charette said in a press release. “The pursuit lasted several miles and went through multiple towns.
“During the pursuit, the operator drove erratically and recklessly and almost struck Trooper Austin with his vehicle,” Charette said. “The chase concluded on Main Street in Winterport.”
Police arrested the driver, Levon Johnson, 36, of Springfield, Mass., on charges of eluding a police officer, passing a roadblock, aggravated reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, forgery, criminal speed, operating without a license, aggravated driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest and disorderly conduct.
Charette said several more charges are pending.
A number of troopers and police agencies aided in the pursuit.
Sgt. Alden Bustard, Cpl. Chris Smith, Trooper Jeremy Caron, Trooper Taylor Dube and his police dog, the Maine Marine Patrol, the Bucksport Police Department and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
