Deputies investigate Route 9 fatal crash

TOWNSHIP 28 — Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Patten woman on Route 9 early Monday morning.

The deceased is Tonya R. Leach, 37, Lt. Corey Bagley reported. A second person in the vehicle, Merrill H. Muncey, 32, of Pembroke, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Bagley said.

Police are uncertain who was operating the vehicle, a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup truck.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that vehicle number 1 was traveling east on Route 9 and drifted onto the shoulder,” Bagley said. “The operator overcorrected, causing the vehicle to go into a skid and leave the roadway on the right-hand side of the road.”

Bagley said the truck rolled over before coming to rest on its wheels.

The crash was reported to the Hancock County Regional Communications Center at 1:46 a.m.

Deputy Travis Frost was assisted at the scene by Deputy Mike Southard, Lt. Tim Cote and Deputy Jeff McFarland. The Aurora Fire Department and Maine Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene.
