Deer Isle man charged with sexual assault

ELLSWORTH A Deer Isle man has been charged with sexually assaulting a child.

Richard Bubar, 46, was taken into custody in York County and booked into the Hancock County Jail Friday on one count each of gross sexual assault and probation violation.

Bubar is on probation from two assault convictions for which he was sentenced to concurrent nine-month jail sentences in March of 2019.

The assaults against the child are alleged to have occurred between Oct. 1, 2019, and March 15 of this year in Deer Isle, according to District Attorney Matt Foster.

Foster ordered the court documents sealed, he said, to protect the victim and to keep Bubar from finding out about the arrest warrant.

Bubar found out anyway and fled the state, according to officials.

On Monday, a judge set Bubar’s bail at $50,000 cash. He is not to have contact with the victim or the victim’s family or with children under age 18 and is not to leave the state of Maine.

There is no word yet on who is representing Bubar. Stonington attorney John Steed had represented him in a negotiated plea on the assault charges two years ago.

Bubar had pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in March 2019 before Justice Robert Murray.

The aggravated assault charge stemmed from a road rage incident in Sedgwick in July 2018.

As part of that sentencing agreement between Assistant District Attorney Heather Staples and Steed, there was a concurrent nine-month sentence for a Feb. 8, 2019, incident in which Bubar bit a Maine State Police trooper and punched a vehicle belonging to a volunteer firefighter.
