Cyclist struck crossing Water Street

ELLSWORTH — A man was transported to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital after he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle near the intersection of Deane and Water streets on Friday around 10 p.m., according to Ellsworth Police Chief Glenn Moshier.

Ellsworth resident Mustafa Al Shuwaili was brought to the hospital by County Ambulance for “complaints of pain on the left side of his body,” Moshier said.

According to a report of the incident, a pickup truck driven by 23-year-old Bucksport resident Cody Wiseman was heading south on Water Street and was making a left turn onto Deane Street when it struck 25-year-old Al Shuwaili. Al Shuwaili had come down the Deane Street hill and was beginning to cross Water Street. The bicycle sustained damage to the front left-hand side.

Moshier said Al Shuwaili was wearing dark clothing and “had no lights or reflective gear” on when he was struck. Moshier added that the department and city are working to make streets safer and that all who use the area’s roads should be aware of their surroundings and carry reflective gear and lights.
