ELLSWORTH — A former Blue Hill piano teacher and convicted pedophile spent several minutes at his resentencing Friday telling Justice Kevin M. Cuddy that his supervisors at the Maine State Prison had entrusted him with special jobs because of his good behavior.

Cuddy was not impressed.

The state says that Theodore Stanislaw sexually abused five girls who were his students between 2002 and 2008 when one of the girls told a family member. The girls were between the ages of 10 and 14 during the abuse.

During Stanislaw’s presentation Friday, he told Cuddy that he works 50 hours a month cleaning a special management unit in the supermax portion of the prison.

“I was approached and asked to do this job,” Stanislaw said. “I was deemed trustworthy because of my behavior in prison. I’ve been successful at that job now for six or seven months.”

Stanislaw said he also cleans an officers’ kitchen and bathrooms.

“I work essentially unsupervised,” Stanislaw said. “I’m left to my own devices.”

“I’m doing something very positive in that regard,” Stanislaw said. “There aren’t many opportunities for inmates to be involved in positive things. I’m doing the best I know how with what’s available to me.”

Stanislaw told Cuddy he is frustrated because there is no sex offender treatment program at the state prison.

“I know the value of the treatment and I’m very eager to get back to that,” Stanislaw said.

Cuddy said he’s pleased Stanislaw is making positive use of his time at the Maine State Prison, but Stanislaw’s ability to manipulate people into thinking he’s trustworthy is a key issue.

“The reality is that’s the core of this crime, that’s why we’re here today,” Cuddy said. “That’s what places the people of Hancock County at risk. It’s that aura of trust and confidence, which quite frankly is a tool he’s used to accomplish his crimes.”
